Roger Wise spent the early part of his career at TWI near Cambridge where he worked on electron beam welding equipment development, before joining the polymer welding group. He developing induction welding of PEEK carbon fibre composite in the early 1990s, and then the world’s first thermoplastic composite to metal welds. He completed a PhD at Cambridge University on ultrasonic welding, wrote a book about welding plastics and co-invented a laser welding technique for transparent polymers. In 2001, Roger became engineering director of a VC funded start up called Antenova, which was commercialising some novel antenna technology for the telecoms industry. The company raised more than £10 million in funding and grew to over 35 people before relocating abroad. In 2003, he returned to TWI, becoming the head of the Advanced Materials & Processed Group, mainly serving industrial joining and surfacing needs in polymers, composites and ceramics. In seven years he increased grew the group profitably to 50 people, becoming an Associate Director in 2010 and earning an MBA on the way. In 2016, Roger left TWI to found Ultrawise Innovation Ltd to continue consulting in polymer and polymer composite joining technologies. The company is also active on two InnovateUK projects focused on the needs of the automotive and electronic devices industries. In 2017, Roger was made Visiting Professor of the University of Hertfordshire.
